What it means when activewear is OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified

Intro

When activewear sits directly on skin, the fabric matters. Beyond stretch and softness, many shoppers want reassurance about what has been tested, especially for pieces worn during sweaty movement. This guide breaks down what OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is, what it does and does not mean, and how we use it as part of our fabric selection for BAL.

What is OEKO-TEX Standard 100

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is a recognised testing standard for textiles. It focuses on whether a fabric has been tested against a list of regulated and restricted substances within current limits. It is not a performance label, and it is not a marketing badge about softness, sweat-wicking, or durability. It is a safety framework used to help brands and customers feel more confident about materials designed for next-to-skin wear.

What “tested for harmful substances” really means

When a fabric is tested under this standard, it is checked for a wide range of substances that may be restricted or regulated in textiles. These can include certain colourants, residues, and other chemical inputs used during manufacturing. The outcome is not “zero chemicals”. Textiles require dyes, finishes, and processing. The point is that the fabric meets defined limits that are considered safer for human contact under the standard.

Why this matters for activewear

Activewear is often worn close to the body for longer periods and in warmer conditions. Sweat, heat, and friction are part of the experience. While everyone’s skin is different, choosing textiles that have been independently tested can be a sensible step for people who prefer an extra layer of reassurance about fabric inputs.

How BAL uses this standard

For BAL, certification is one part of our material decision making. Our current fabric lots are certified under OEKO-TEX Standard 100 for direct skin contact and tested by an independent lab.
Certificate reference: SHWD 099103.

This does not replace personal preference or individual sensitivities, and it does not guarantee a product will work for every person. It is one way we help keep our fabric choices more transparent and considered.

What to look for when shopping

If you are comparing activewear, here are simple checks that do not rely on hype:

  1. Look for independent testing language, not vague “clean fabric” claims.
  2. Check whether the standard is relevant for next-to-skin wear.
  3. Prefer brands that explain what the certification covers and keep wording realistic.
  4. Focus on fit, comfort, and the use-case you actually need.

FAQ

Does OEKO-TEX mean the fabric is organic
No. It is a testing standard for harmful substances. It does not mean organic fibre or sustainable supply chain.

Does certified fabric guarantee no skin reactions
No certification can guarantee that. Skin can react for many reasons. Certification is one layer of reassurance, not a medical promise.

Does certification mean better performance in the gym
Not necessarily. Performance depends on fabric construction, garment design, and fit. Certification relates to restricted substances testing.
